This interactive e-Learning course is designed to help financial practitioners to learn about a financial regulatory regime in Hong Kong.
- Responsibilities: Instructional Design, e-Learning Development
- Target Audience: Senior management of companies who are regulated by the principal regulator of the securities and futures market in Hong Kong
- Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Vyond, Adobe Premier Pro, Adobe Photoshop
- Budget: Medium
- Year: 2021-2022
I designed and developed this interactive e-Learning course using Articulate Storyline and Vyond mainly.

Process
The eCourse on this regulatory regime was first developed and published in 2017 and since then, there are multiple updates issued and disciplinary proceedings enforced by the Hong Kong regulator. My company decided to revamp the eCourse and I worked with some pre-existing content to create a new eCourse.
I first tried out the old eCourse myself and identified the areas that can be improved. Then I reviewed learners feedback on the old eCourse from the learners evaluation report. One thing that stood out to me is the slow navigation and lack of interactivity in the old eCourse.
I decided to create short video clips to make it more engaging and improve the navigation. I also added two drag-and-drop interactions as knowledge checks as I wanted to create an interactive experience for the learners.
The new eCourse is well received by learners. It has been published in English first then localised into two languages, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

Instructional Design
The compliance content about the regulatory regime was quite technical. To make it more conversational, personalisation principle was used and fictional characters representing different senior management roles were introduced to make the learning experience more engaging.
To improve the navigation, I decided to replace the text-based conversation with comic-style short video clips. This way, the learner can hear the information directly from the fictional characters who knows the struggles and strategies in complying with the regulatory regime. |
With the learning objectives and assessment strategy solidified, I began writing content and drafting knowledge check questions. One of the learning objectives is to remind learners to submit the correct information to the regulatory body in Hong Kong. To create a more immersive scene, I listed a dozen of documents that would show to the learners in the knowledge check. Learners would drag and drop the documents to the correct location, i.e. submitting to the regulatory body or filing the document in the office.
With this content in hand, I was ready to move into development.

e-Learning Development
Once I had all the content for revamping the eCourse ready-to-go, I moved into development with Articulate Storyline and Vyond.
I was given a set of photos that are required to be used in the new eCourse. The challenge is to convert these static photos into an engaging video. I came up with a few designs on how the static photos and conversational bubbles will be shown in the video clip. The simple comic-style was chosen and I used motion paths in Vyond to make it more interesting.

With all the Vyond videos ready in hand, I then imported them to Storyline and set up the triggers. I added a trigger where the video will player when the learner clicks the 'Play' button shown on top of the video.
I also added a trigger that allows the learner to replay the video. I used the 'jump to cue point' function in Storyline to make sure the video will start at the beginning. |
Takeaways
This project gave me a great opportunity to explore more on the drag-and-drop interactions in Storyline. I was able to use the built-in interactivity in the authoring tool to speed up development on some slides but some slides did require me to build the interactivity from scratch.
